The larynx (larynx) is the structure in front of the pharynx (pharynx), which houses the vocal cords and prevents food from escaping into the trachea.

Laryngitis is the name given to inflammation of the wall or wall covering the vocal cords. It can be seen in all age groups. The incidence is higher in those who use their voice professionally, smoke, and work in crowded environments. It occurs as acute laryngitis or chronic laryngitis.

Acute laryngitis:

It occurs most frequently due to viruses (often influenza, parainfluenza, rhinoviruses). Again, reflux can be seen as a result of talking loudly, allergies, hypothyroidism, mixed edema, radiotherapy applied to the neck, climate changes or infections. It can be contagious. It is usually of sudden onset.

Symptoms of acute laryngitis:

  • Hoarseness (may be near complete)
  • It is in the form of bifurcation in the voice and accompanying almost complete throttling.
  • Cough
  • dry throat
  • Sore throat

Treatment of acute laryngitis:

Antivirals, steroids, anti-inflammatories, lozenges, mucolytic expectorants and antibiotics for bacterial origin can be used. The voice should be rested and plenty of fluids should be taken. Alcohol, smoking and polluted air should be avoided. Application of steam, especially applications containing menthol, eucalyptus and chamomile vapor may be beneficial.

Chronic laryngitis:

It usually lasts longer than 2 weeks. Since hoarseness lasting longer than 4 weeks may be a sign of laryngeal cancer, a doctor should be consulted. The most common cause is reflux disease. Damage to the vocal cord nerve, sprays used by asthma patients, polyps, nodules, smoking are among the causes of long-term hoarseness.

Symptoms of chronic laryngitis:

  • hoarseness
  • loss of voice
  • Irritation in the throat
  • dry cough
  • Fire
  • Swelling in neck lymphs
  • difficulty swallowing

Treatment of chronic laryngitis:

It is investigated whether there is another underlying disease. If there is, first of all, this disease is treated. Sound therapy may be beneficial if it is due to professional use of the voice (such as a teacher, singer, call center staff). Voice rest is also required. Plenty of fluids should be consumed. Smoky, stuffy environments that trigger laryngitis should be avoided. Smoking and alcohol should not be used. Foods and beverages that increase stomach acid should not be consumed. Before going to bed, no food or drink other than water should be eaten or drunk for at least 2 hours.
